| Yeah, not only does the value of human life seemed to measured in wealth but I guess age too. Did you read this morning's paper? Some nursing home managers in Louisiana just left 34 elderly people in the St. Rita's Nursing Home with no way to get out. They all died. It's really unbelievable and so sad. Again, it came down to money. The managers had an evacuation plan as required by law, but consciously decided to stay the course because moving people in wheelchairs and walkers, some with feeding tubes etc., would have been very costly, too costly I guess...

I have been reading, mostly with tears in my eyes, of the unimaginable horror taking place all along the Gulf Coast but especially in New Orleans. With the anniversary of 9/11 just 4 days away the scenes coming from the Hurricane wrecked neigborhoods are really scarey. I keep hearing how we should have done this or that, or who is to blame for not evacuating those who could not simply jump in their cars or get on a bus out of town.
We have to know that the reactions of all levels of Government (Local,State and Federal) to this natural disaster do not bode well for any future terrorist attacks against us on our own soil. Yes, there was a major response after 9/11 and it was immediate and far quicker then what we saw last week, but we are talking about NYC and Wall street in particular here. Nobody should be so naive as to think that the response to an attack on a 'less strategic' place would be nearly as swift as last weeks events clearly point out.
What is wrong with this country that it places the value of a human life on the same scale as wordly Wealth. It is time to stop and think about this because surely there will be more attacks (natural or man made) and I for one do not want to think that the response will be measured by the size of Credit balances in the Banks of the local area!
From where I sit everyday I can see the pit of Ground zero in NYC and feel the collective hurt of this city even after 4 years! But it is really important that everyone realize that the hurt in NYC is no more or less than that in New Orleans today and and in the years ahead. A Human life is a Human Life.
Whether it is an NYC firefighter, office worker or a poor Black Man or Woman in Louisiana, we have a responsibility to each life equally!!
